OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is the difference between \[\log_{8} (x^2)\] and \[2\log_{8} (x)\]

OpenStudy (danjs):

log property \[\log_{b}a^b =b*\log_{b}a \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My confusion is when graphing or finding the domain

OpenStudy (danjs):

ignore that i used b twice in the same side. a^c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

when i graphed log8(x^2) it gives me a domain from (-00,0) U (0,00) while when using the power rule it is just from (0,00)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't get how that can happen..

OpenStudy (danjs):

x can be negative or positive when it is squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes but aren't the two function equivalent ? and should therefore have the same domain

OpenStudy (danjs):

look at the first blue box rules there http://www.andrews.edu/~calkins/math/webtexts/numb17.htm

OpenStudy (danjs):

x>0
