OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

What is the purpose of the chats on OpenStudy?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

chats or messages?

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

Chats.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

chats are for helping people solve questions

hartnn (hartnn):

Group interaction with fellow users is one of the many efficient forms of learning. Most group chats can be used to informally discuss about existing problems and their solutions in that subject/field of study. Ofcourse, they can be (and mostly) used for social interactions, to get to know your fellow users on a more personal level, chill out and make new friends! :)

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The goal was to get more conversations on the topics of study and to add more social interaction to the site. Sadly, they just get abused more than anything else.

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

That's what I thought. Thanks, @hartnn

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

the chats used to be productive, but now some users (mostly new accounts) just spam or use chat to harass others :/

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

@usukidoll What exactly do you mean by "productive"?

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

productive meaning casual conversation or talking about math related topics.
