keeping citizens involve in due process of law the cost of houseing for the accused
I'm fairly certain they were concerned over whether or not people would want to live in a democracy if that democracy couldn't treat it's citizens fairly. So the fair/speedy trial in public is a way of reassuring them justice will be performed fairly.
