The binomial (y − 2) is a factor of y^2 − 10y + 16. What is the other factor? a) (y − 5) b) (y + 5) c) (y − 8) d) (y + 8)

OpenStudy (misty1212):

HI!!

OpenStudy (misty1212):

what would you multiply \(-2\) by to get \(+16\)?

OpenStudy (misty1212):

which is another way of asking, what is \(16\div-2\)?

OpenStudy (lokiando):

16/2=-8

OpenStudy (misty1212):

right which leaves you only one choice there

OpenStudy (lokiando):

OpenStudy (usukidoll):

yes that's correct all combinations of 16 16 x 1 = 16 4 x 4 = 16 8 x 2 = 16 but only one pair of numbers makes 10 which is 8+2 so 8 is the missing number needed to make another factor (y-2)(y-8) good job everyone!
