each trial is separate, the chance of getting a tail on the first try is 1/2 on the second try it is 1/2 on the third try it is 1/2 so if this happens in all 3 trials, you get 1/2 x 1/2x1/2 = 1/8 another way to look at this is to write out all possible combinations of events, H will mean heads and T tails you could have: H H H meaning all three heads H H T first two are heads, the third tails H T T H T H T H H T T H T H T T T T you can see that there are 8 possible outcomes of flipping a coin 3 times; only one of the 8 results in all three Ts
