A film set designer is using white and colored tiles in a pattern to create paths of different lengths. If x is the length of the path in feet, the number of colored tiles needed to make it is calculated using the rule (8x2y2)(3xy) where y represents the number of white tiles. Which simplified expression represents the number of colored tiles used for a path of length x feet? 24x3y3 11x3y3 24x2y2 11x2y2

@phi any help

@Jacob902 ??

OpenStudy (phi):

they want you to multiply (8x2y2)(3xy) surely you can multiply the two "pure" numbers what do you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

24x3y3

OpenStudy (phi):

yes you get 24, and yes the x^2 * x gives x^3 and ditto for the y's

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so its A?

OpenStudy (phi):

if you remember that x^2 is short for x*x and if you multiply by another x you get x*x*x you could write the answer as 24*x*x*x*y*y*y but people use the "short way" to write it 24 x^3 y^3

OK
