The Western Church claimed authority over the Eastern Church because the Pope wanted the Eastern Church to remain Christian. wanted the Eastern Church to move to Rome. believed he had power over both churches. believed he had power over European kings.

I will go with last answer. Cuz pope turned to political and military leaders in the west for support and began to cut ties with the Byzantine emperor. In the year 800, the pope crowned Charlemagne the new Holy Roman Emperor. This outraged the Byzantines who felt that the Byzantine emperor was the rightful ruler of the Roman Empire. The dispute between the pope and Byzantine emperors continued. The pope claimed authority over the church, kings, and emperors, including the Eastern Church and the Byzantine emperor.
This is what I can remember . I'm not good in history that much better double check with some one !
@Rushwr is correct.
