Find the constant difference for a hyperbola with foci at F1 (0, -10) and F2 (0, 10), and point on the hyperbola (0, 6).

example

OpenStudy (jacob902):

Find the constant difference for a hyperbola with foci F1(-9,0) and F2(9,0) and the point on the hyperbola (3,? Find the constant difference for a hyperbola with foci F1(-9,0) and F2(9,0) and the point on the hyperbola (3,0)

OpenStudy (jacob902):

The center of the hyperbola is (0, 0), so c = 9. x^2/a^2 - y^2/b^2 = 1 9/a^2 - 0/b^2 = 1 9 = a^2 a = 3 c^2 = a^2 + b^2 81 = 9 + b^2 72 = b^2 The constant difference is 2a, or 6. The equation, by the way, would be x^2/9 - y^2/72 = 1
