because OS used to be referred to as "inquus"
and if you go to inquus.org, it loads the OS website.

True, but the openstudy.com domain age is far older then inquus.org
inquus.org was made with openstudy came out of beta... which also means it doesnt align with that eric said (being that this was refered to as inquus until they came up with a name)

chances are that they used the company name without the domain name at first... and made the domain when they finally decided upon a name
