Of these 5 flavours of popcorn seasoning which do you like the best or do you think you would like the best? Will fan everyone who responds and medal the first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a survey I have to do for my math class

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (mrnood):

do you think that 'voluntary responders' on a forum focussing on a very specific topic (i.e.maths) is likely to yield a representative sample of 'popcorn eaters'?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My survey is for the statistics unit of my algebra 2 course which last time I checked is mathematics... so it is perfectly fine to have my survey here. If you would like to answer my survey question it would be much appreciated. @MrNood

OpenStudy (peachytea):

kettle corn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much! :D

OpenStudy (peachytea):

your welcome! and i best responsed you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for that :D

OpenStudy (mrnood):

The point I am making is key to your 'survey' The answers you get here will be fine - and I don't have any issue with oyu adsking it here. BUT BUT BUT One of the BIG problems with surveys is ensuring that the sample you take is representative of the population you hope to evaluate. My point is that people responding here are: a) self selecting - b) have an 'abnormal' interest in maths. I only asked you to consider whether this makes a good basis for a sample of 'popcorn eaters'

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes because my survey is of a population who eats popcorn, and so if these people eat popcorn then its okay.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

No - that is not correct (I am not trying to flame or anything) This is an important point about surveys It is not sufficient to find 'any people' who eat popcorn. IF you rely solely on answers from this forum than your samples does NOT represent the full range of people who eat popcorn. It is very important if your survey is going to be meaningful that the sample represents the WHOLE population of popcorn eaters. People answering here are special in many ways a) they self selected, i.e. they CHOSE to answer - so they are probably more interested than most in surveys and or popcorn b) they are probably in general young - but many old people eat popcorn c) They are studying online - so maybe represent a slightly more educated sample than average d) they are studying maths - so maybe have a more rational outlook than average. It is not important to me whethewr you use this data or not - but IF YOU WANT TO LEARN then please take note of what I said - and maybe go and study 'randomised sample' and the importance of this to useful data collection. Thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I never said this was the only group of people I was surveying… I surveyed people from many different groups.

OpenStudy (mrnood):

OK - better Sample bias is the MAIN downfall of interpreting data from surveys. Just be aware of it.
