MEDAL!!! If a rectangle has a perimeter of 16, what is its area? A. 16 B. 12 C. 8 D. 6 E. It cannot be determined from the information given.

@triciaal

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I got the answer of E. Correct or not?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

This is a rectangle. A square has all congruent sides.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ya it looks like the answer is E. since the sides can be different numbers that can add up to 16 as the perimeter.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Area of a rectangle is WxH and perimeter is 2(wxH) but not enough information is given to solve so the answer is E

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it can be any number as the sides of that rectangle then you won't know what the area is.

OpenStudy (zale101):

If we said the perimeter is 16, we can conclude that if we add a length and a width together we'll get 16/2 or 8. So let L = the Length, and width is (8-L) Area of a rectangle is therefore L(8-L) We dont get a number for the area from only knowing the perimeter. SO i'd say the answer is E.
