describe the structure of an atom and the importance the structure plays in its properties and functions

OpenStudy (zale101):

Atoms are considered to be the smallest units of elements consisting of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons are positively charged subatomic particles they are located in the nucleus along with neutrons. Electrons are negatively charged subatomic particles and they are located outside the atoms. Atoms are important because they are what ALL matters are made up of. Everything is built out of atoms :D
