Mathematics 8 Online
OpenStudy (anonymous):

Find the volume of a rectangular prism if the length is x, the width is x*2, and the height is 5x*2 + 4x + 1. Use the formula V = l ⋅ w ⋅ h, where l is length, w is width, and h is height, to find the volume.

OpenStudy (phi):

by x*2 do you mean x^2 (i.e. \(x^2\) ) ?

OpenStudy (phi):

if so, they want you to multiply out the 3 expressions. to multiply , write them down next to each other: \[ x \cdot x^2 \cdot ( 5x^2 + 4x + 1)\] now simplify. what is x * x^2 (* means multiply here) ? one way to figure it out: x * x*x which is x^3 (written the "short way" with exponents) now "distribute" the x^3 by multiplying every term inside the parens by x^3
