OpenStudy (rushwr):

The nemotocyst is used by Cnidarians (hydra, jellyfish, sea anemones) to sting their prey and any threatening enemy. Small organisms will be paralized by it and larger organisms will find it painful and flee. These can be triggered either by the organism rubbing up against a pressure sensitive trigger point on the Cnidarian tentacles or in some such as the sea anemone it is triggered by sensing a certain amino acid that is present in the slime coat of most marine fish. The clown fish is an example of a fish that is missing that amino acid and is why it can live among sea anemones without being stung.
