How did President Clinton’s impeachment lead to Newt Gingrich’s resignation as Speaker of the House? Gingrich decided that he no longer wanted to work with a president who was convicted of wrongdoing. Negative feelings about the attacks on Clinton led to a loss of confidence in Gingrich. Gingrich resigned as Speaker so that he could start a campaign to run for president. Republicans in Congress blamed Gingrich for the failure to convict Clinton on impeachment charges.
