OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is the question What is p-m divided by pn equal to? p-m + np-m x np-m - np-m divided by n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (phi):

if you divide numbers that have the same base (as in here) the answer is the same base with a new exponent the new exponent is top exponent - bottom exponent can you do the problem ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You add, right @Phi

OpenStudy (phi):

let me redo this sentence: the new exponent is top exponent *minus* bottom exponent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So its C? @phi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Theres another question you will see it has fractions..

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, c can you post a screen shot. the rtf's are a pain to look at

OpenStudy (phi):

if you multiply numbers with the same base, then add the exponents. what is 2+ -5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (phi):

so the first step: what is 2+ -5 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7

OpenStudy (phi):

2+5 is 7 2+ -5 is something else

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3?

OpenStudy (phi):

if it is -5 degrees outside and the temperature goes up by 2 degrees, how cold is it?

OpenStudy (phi):

if all else fails, what does a calculator say the answer is? (though you should learn how to do negative numbers)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Negative 7

OpenStudy (phi):

2-5 is -3 one way to do it is say start at 2 the minus means go down 5 steps 2 1 0 -1 -2 -3

OpenStudy (phi):

anyway the answer is \[ 3^{-3} \] that does not match any choices, but we can use the rule flip the number and make the exponent positive in other words \[ 3^{-3} = \frac{1}{3^3}\]
