The correct answer is indirect object, I believe.
Indirect object answers the questions: "to whom?" or "for whom" 
In this case it answers the question, "to whom did he serve the special dinner last night?"

Okay, well, for starters, we know that it can't be possessive. "Them" just doesn't pass as something possessive. If it was, it would be "their."

The subject in this sentence should be "he" since "he" is doing the verb. From there, you're with either the indirect object or the direct object. 

The direct object, in my opinion, is what people tend to accidentally think the subject is. That's just based on observation. In this case, that's "special dinner."

So, your answer would be the indirect object, as "them" is sort of passed over to get to the point.
