Do you know PEMDAS?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 10-2\times4 }{ 2 }\]\[\frac{ 10-8 }{ 2 }\]\[\frac{ 2 }{ 2 }\]\[1\]

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

That is the order of operations.

OpenStudy (spicytaco1):

@mathstudent55 yes

PEMDAS will help you make sure you get the correct answer. If you don't use it then you'll get a completely different answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Use PEMDAS in this problem. First you would need to multiply the numerator before you can subtract.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Once you multiply you can subtract. Lastly you just need to divide to get your answer.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Also, a fraction means division and parentheses. \(\dfrac{10 - 2 \cdot 4}{2} = (10 - 2 \cdot 2) \div 2\) Notice how the numerator of the fraction is all grouped in parentheses. This is what I meant before when I wrote that a fraction also means parentheses in addition to division.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

\(\dfrac{10 - 2 \cdot 4}{2} = (10 - 2 \cdot 2) \div 2 =\) \(= (10 - 8) \div 2 = 2 \div 2 = 1\)

(10−2⋅2)÷2 What happened here? @mathstudent55
