well what is a sensible number of hours to work each week, given there are 168 hourrs in a week. 

That would be the upper limit on the domain.

just like 0 < x <= upper limit

so you need to work more that 0 hours but less that an upper limit... so 40 hours per week so its 

0 < x <= 40
