I'm pretty sure it would be a because it's a negative number but can someone confirm for a medal? Which of the following is irrational? -9 over 5 Square root of 5 7 over 3 Square root of 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. But since all the other ones are positive wouldn't the irrational number be the fraction negative 9 over 5

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

rational means you can write it as a fraction of two whole numbers rational numbers can be negative eg: -2/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohhhh so the square root of 9 would be wrong

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

that is equivalent to 3 which is the same as 3/1 sqrt(9) is rational since 3 is rational

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But the square root of 5 don't have any whole numbers it would be like 2.5 so wouldn't that one be irrational?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

sqrt(5) is irrational. there is no way to write it as a fraction of whole numbers

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

we can get approximations, but never the exact thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Than you so much(:

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
