The Roman Catholic Church elected a new pope. Their choice was to elect an Italian cardinal, who became Pope Urban VI. King Phillip of France decided that he did not like the Italian Pope so he elected one of his own. Western Christendom split, with having two popes and two accompanying papal structures.
