I think it was because they had a negative perception of the Europeans, and when they traded, Chinese weren't interested in European goods so they just made them pay in gold and silver. I think.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup the China has an all encompassing climate they have all the luxuries Europe had. That is until the Spanish found silver in South America.
