Elite theory, a part of the conflict perspective, is a theory which attempts to explain the political and social roles that people play within the class structure of society. This theory was a favorite of C. Wright Mills, and is popular today in the work of G. William Domhoff, who often points to this theory to explain the politics of America today.

Essentailly, this theory explains how a small group of "ruling elite" own, manage, and dominate society, and economically control the rest of us.
