Because at that time, women were nothing more than sisters and mothers. Yes there was a queen, however the social hierarchy standards were different then they are now. Women and children were at the bottom of the totem pole. Take Shakespeare into consideration, look at the difference in the amount of lines that women have in his plays, and how they have no sense of personality or selfhood.
