We have a lot in common that the human genome project has revealed that we and our primate cousins have more than 97% similarity. It was also discovered that in number of chromosomes, apes have an extra pair of chromosomes, we have 23 and apes have 24 pairs. This was discovered in early 1980's and it was hypothesized that this most likely resulted in the fusion, not a deletion, but fusion of chromosomes. Lo' and behold, it was indeed as a result of a fusion. This fusion has paved way in our marked difference in long term development and abilities as displayed in adults. Now this does not suggest that we came from monkeys nor we are apes, it suggests that apes and humans have a common ancestor that can be traced back in time. The chromosomes and genome are just one place to look at, but there are other ways of discovering whether the claim of common ancestry is supported in the field of developmental biology and anatomy and other burgeoning field of bioinformatics like molecular biology.
