This is a process called elimination. How this works is you add the two equations together to isolate either x or y

So that you would have only one unknown variable

2y=16 after adding the two equations together.

which you get y=8. Then you substitute the value of y into either of the equations to get the x.

8=2x+2 2x=6 x=3
