Functions 1 and 2 are shown below: Function 1: f(x) = −3x^2 + 2 Which function has a larger maximum? Type your answer as 1 or 2.

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

well, the graph shows you the maximum value of function 2, which is a little bit above 4, agreed?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

so to find the maximum value of function 1, we let x = 0 and calculate function 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.. ok one second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The maximum for function 1 would be 0, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Vocaloid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can someone help?

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you help? @sohailiftikhar

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

where is function 1

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

function 1 is −3x^2 + 2 when x = 0, what is function 1? (it's not 0)

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

-3(x^2) + 2 = -3(0^2) + 2 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I keep getting 0....??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Vocaloid

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

you're forgetting the 2...

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

let's break it into two parts, ok? first part: -3(0^2) = ?

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Please tell me its 0... 0 raised to the 2nd power is 0... 0 times -3 is 0... what am i doing wrong???

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

when x=1 then it will be funtion 1 f(1)=-3(1)+2=-1

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

now funtion 2 x=2 f(2)=-3(2)^2+2=-4

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

so function 2 has maximum value

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer is 4? @Vocaloid @sohailiftikhar

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

nope, not quite... we're looking at function 1

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

your question is which function has a maximum value to answer is function 2

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

function 1 = -3(0^2) + 2 the first part is -3(0^2) = 0 the second part is + 2 so add them together to get

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

the question is asking to find the maximum values of function 1 and 2, then to see which maximum is higher...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes max for function 1 is -1 and max for function 2 is 4... So function 2 maximum is higher

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

well, yeah, function 2 has the higher maximum

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

yes

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

function 1 has the maximum value of 2 because 3(0^2) + 2 = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh!!!!!!!!! So for my answer I type 2...cuz function 2 is 4?

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

yes...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats why i kept getting it wrong.. for my answer i kept putting 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much guys!!!!

OpenStudy (sohailiftikhar):

lol np
