This is how u do it . If u are asked to find the distance between X and Y . U will say it is x-y right? SO  here its gonna be -40-18 = =58

See if u are travelling from 18th pint to =40 th point okai. ?  And imagine these are meter values ! 
So 18th to zero point u have gone 18 m right? and zero to 40th point u have gone another 40m so adding that it would be 58 since it is to the opposite direction it would be negative.

Absolute value is a number's distance from zero.  All distances are positive.

absolute values are always gonna be positive, so the only one that theoretically makes sense would be the 3rd one.
