A lamppost, CAB, bent at point A after a storm. The tip of the lamppost touched the ground at point C, as shown below: Triangle ABC has measure of angle C equal to 60 degrees, measure of angle ABC equal to 90 degrees, and length of BC equal to 14 feet. What is the height, in feet, of the portion AB of the lamppost?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

start by drawing a picture and labeling what you know.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok one second

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you studying trig right now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No geometry but we get alot of trig questions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

do you know your trig functions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I understand i have to use soh cah toa, but i only get one calculation here, and thats the adjacent

OpenStudy (anonymous):

14 divided by cos 60 degrees 14 tan 60° 14 divided by tan 60 degrees 14 cos 60° these are the options im given.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you have enough information to figure out the answer. You have the measure of angle C so use that to your advantage.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in relation to angle C you know the adjacent side and you want to know the opposite side. Which trig function relations opposite and adjacent sides?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the tangent function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would it be 14 tan 60?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

perfect, so plug in what you know...you know the angle is 60, you know the adjacent side is 14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

solve for what you don't know (opposite side)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops, I just saw your answer. Yes, 14 tan 60

OpenStudy (anonymous):

clear as mud on how we got there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol thanks you're a life saver, and mind answering a few more questions? Lol more like clear as glass

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have a little bit more time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanks i'll post in another question so i can medal u again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol, ok :) I used to teach math but don't anymore so this is actually fun for me.
