Explain two ways in which sectionalism caused conflict or tension in the United States during the early 1800s. Then explain how sectionalism affects economics and politics in the United States today.

OpenStudy (comm.dan):

The states in the North didn't own any slaves at all and lots of industry was springing up, while the population was becoming more rural. In the South, farming was primarily done and there were lots of slaves. Because of this agreement over having slaves versus not having slaves, it resulted in the Civil War. Sectionalism still occurs in the US today with it being expressed through political and social issues. Certain areas of the country such as the southeast and midwest are both more conservative in social matter and vote for Republicans. On the other hand, the northeast and west coast are more liberal and vote for Democrats.
