The lengths of two sides of a triangle are 12 inches and 4 inches. Which of the following dimensions is the third side of this triangle? 9 inches 8 inches 7 inches 6 inches
I'LL GIVE A MEDAL WHOEVER ANSWERS IT CORRECTLY!
Use the pythagorean theorem!
so what would i do?
Did the question say it was a right triangle?
no
Then there is no way of figuring this out.
it is a right angle
@steve816
Oh okay then, did the question say if the 2 sides were the legs or the hypotenuse. This information is needed to solve the problem.
no its just a regular triangle
What type of triangle??? Isocolese, scalene, or right triangle
normal 3 sided triangle
Okay so is this the entire question?
yup

we know that 2 sides are 4 and 12, and the sum of any two sides must be greater than the third side so third side + 4 > 12 third side > 8 that leaves us with one answer choice, which one is it?
let x be the third side (some unknown number) x has to be larger than 12-4 = 8 AND x has to be smaller than 12+4 = 16 so x is between 8 and 16 excluding both endpoints algebraically 8 < x < 16 has to be true for a triangle to form
