does anyone know how to graph y=-2x^2 ?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if you were to replace x with 0, what would the value of y be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0, right?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yes, so one ordered pair, ie point, on the graph is (0,0)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

if x = 1, then y = -2 leading us to another point (1,-2) if x = 2, then y = -8 leading us to another point (2,-8) etc etc you make a table of points and then plot those points. The more points, the more accurate the graph. Once you have all the points plotted, you draw a curve through all of the points

thank you, this helps so much!!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome I recommend checking your answer with something like desmos (a free online graphing calculator) https://www.desmos.com/calculator/ the calculator also allows you to generate a table of points
