Carlotta Rodriguez purchased six bushes for $19.27 each, a porch swing for $88.22, and a gas grill for $321.77. She must pay the state tax of 4.5% and the city tax of 2%. What is the total purchase price?

OpenStudy (sepeario):

Okay let's work out the total original price first and then we'll add on the taxes. So essentially we have the equation \[6 * 19.27 + 88.22 + 321.77= ?\]

OpenStudy (sepeario):

Are you able to evaluate that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

$525.61?

OpenStudy (sepeario):

Yes nice! Now we have to add on the taxation. If the taxing is 4.5%+2%=6.5% total, you then convert the percentage to a decimal, which equals 0.065. You then multiply that by your total value, hence: \[0.065 * 525.61 \approx 34.16\]

OpenStudy (sepeario):

So the taxed amount should be around $34.16.
