Solve the equation |x+4| = 5 I don't know what the steps are for this sort of equation. Please can someone help?

OpenStudy (phi):

the absolute value sign makes what is inside positive. we do this by 1) assume x+4 is positive. if it is, then we can drop the abs val sign x+4= 5 solve for x 2) assume (x+4) is negative. we know the | | will make it positive to make it positive we can multiply by -1 in other words -1*(x+4) will be positive, and we drop the | | solve -1*(x+4)= 5
