Which expressions are equivalent to 4(4x + 2y + x − y)? 4(5x + 3y) and 20x + 12y 4(5x + y) and 20x + 4y 4(3x + y) and 12x + 4y 4(3x + 3y) and 12x + 12y

OpenStudy (phi):

look at what is in the parens 4x + 2y + x − y that shows you have 4 x's plus 1 more x how many x's is that ? it also shows 2 y's take away 1 y. how many y's is that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 x 2 y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well.. i should say.. 5 x's 2 y's

OpenStudy (phi):

ok but they are added so 5x+2y (I used 4 x's plus 1 more x to make it clearer what we are doing... but people just write 4x+1x= 5x )

OpenStudy (phi):

check that you have 2 y's take away 1 y. the answer is not 2y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it B?

OpenStudy (phi):

can you redo the work for 4x + 2y + x − y
