Jeri is 3 years younger than Laura, whose age is x. How old is Jeri?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Think of it this way. If Laura is 10 years old, and Jeri is 3 years younger, how old is Jeri?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10-3=7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or in this case, x-3=7....i think

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

That is the idea, but you don't have enough information to find out either person's age. This is my example to write an expression for Jeri's age. If Laura is 10 and Jeri is 3 years younger, then Jeri's age is 10 - 3. In the problem above, do the same calculation but let Laura's age be x since we don't know it. If Laura is x years old and Jeri is 3 years younger, then Jeri is x - 3 years old.
