OpenStudy (matthew120):

Which is the best estimate for the quotient of 686.13 ÷ 9.231? A. 7,000 B. 700 C. 70 D. 7

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

What do you think? Do a quick and dirty estimate. See if anything is even close.

OpenStudy (matthew120):

i want to say its b

OpenStudy (jjwalton04):

that would be incorrect, because 686.13 ÷ 9.231=74.3288918 and since the second number is four, when you round down you get 70

OpenStudy (jjwalton04):

so the answer is c

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Horrible. Absolutely horrible. What's the point of estimation if you're just using a calculator?! 686.13 isn't too far from 700 9.231 isn't too far from 10 700 / 10 = 70 -- Now THAT is an estimate.

OpenStudy (jjwalton04):

-_- i like my way better

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

"Your way" isn't a way at all. It's just using a calculator. That will not EVER be a good way to produce a quick and useful estimate in your head. It's just using a calculator. That will not help you when the grid goes down, you run out of fuel in your generator, and your last battery dies. The problem is to teach estimating. Calculator usage is a different class.

OpenStudy (jjwalton04):

... Bro calm down.

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

No calming necessary. Just the facts.
