I need help solving the x and y by eliminating these equations together 2x+y=11 6x-y=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add them up in a column

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Add the equations up notice how the 2x and 6x combine to 8x the +y and -y add to 0y, that goes away the 11 and 5 add to 16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the \(y\) terms add up to zero, leaving only the x terms \[8x=16\]

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so you'll end up with 8x = 16 which means x = ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So x is 2 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to find y replace x by 2 in either equation

Ok thank you!
