Please help me simplify. v^2 + 2v - 24 / 3v^2 - 33v + 84

OpenStudy (welshfella):

Ok first see if you can factor the numerator to do this you need to think of 2 numbers with a product of -24 and a sum of + 2.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

taking the numbers to be a and b the factors will look like (x + a)(x + b)

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

start by looking at the denominator and factoring out 3

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

\[\frac{v^2 +2v -24}{3(v^2 - 11v + 24)}\] then factor each quadratic... for the numerator find the factors of -24 that add to 2... the larger factor is positive for the denominator find the factors of 24 that add to - 11, both factors are negative. then see if there are any common factors that can be removed.
