I think you would add them together like, 0.5+0.8 , but it might also be asking for what is in the middle section, which is, 0.3 . They worded this strangely

They did... The way it sounds, they are specifically asking for what they have already given you, The center, which is 0.3 But, they may also be looking for what is in each without using the center area.. Unsure.

I think what they are asking for is the 0.5+0.8...

I think so too, Maybe they are asking to find the sum of the two and then use that number and subtract it from one.
