Consider the function represented by 9x + 3y = 12 with x as the independent variable. How can this function be written using function notation?

if x is independent, it is the "input" variable, so you take x values and calculate y values, so y is a function of x so we can say that y = f(x) you need therefore to play with your equation until it says y = ..... where you have x and constant terms in place of ..... you can then say that y = f(x) = ...
