theres no multiple choice for this one.. so just explain the answer and the steps to how you got the answer please :) Emerson purchased a game that was on sale for 18% off. The sales tax in his county is 8%. Let y represent the original price of the game. Write an expression that can be used to determine the final cost of the game.

@Michele_Laino

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Is the sales tax before or after the discount?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

I'm assuming after, so you would do y minus the 18% off, plus 8% of the discounted price.

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

To calculate the discounted price, you would do the original price, y, minus 18% of y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you explain how you get the answer in steps please :) @StudyGurl14 @Michele_Laino @welshfella

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Okay, so you have the item at the original price, y. Correct? Then it's on sale for 18% off. So you do 18% times y to get how much money off of the price. Then to find the actual discounted price, you do the original price minus the discount, which is \(y-(18\%)y\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but can you write it like this so i understand it better... please thx :) 1... 2...

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Then, you have to add sales tax, which is 8%. So, you take that expression up there, multiply it by 8% to find the amount of the tax, which you then add to the expression to find the total amount paid.

@StudyGurl14

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

1. Find discount (amount off): (18%)y 2. Simplify: 0.18y You with me so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea.. continue :) @StudyGurl14 but can you also like answer it as your going :)

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

3. Next, find the discounted price. Original Price - discount off = y - 0.18y Which equals what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but can you add everything in.. like give me the complete answers in the steps please :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can we start from step 1 again please @StudyGurl14 ill do it with you

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

I don't understand what you want...? Step 1: Find discount (amount off of original price)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what i mean is to like not add the parentheses for example... dont do this: (amount off of original price) actually put the answer .. you get me?

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

I did. I put this --> (18%)y

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

that's the answer to step 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly so whats step 1 completely

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Um...? Like this? 1: (18%)y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so this is step 1: Find discount ( 18%)y

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

Okay....the parenthesis is just to further clarify. Sorry if it confused you. 1: Find discount - (18%)y 2: Simplify: 0.18y 3. Find discounted price - y - 0.18y 4: Simplify: 0.82y OK?

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

5: Find sales tax: (8%)(0.82)y 6. Simplify: (0.08)(0.82)y

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

7: Simplify: 0.0656y 8. Find total paid: 0.82y + 0.0656y 9: Simplify: 0.8856y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is step 9 the final answer?

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

yeah.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok and are you sure its correct?

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks i have some more problems .. ill tag you :)

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

k

OpenStudy (studygurl14):

can i have a medal please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ofcourse!
