Hi, I'm new...please help. The square of a number increased by 5 times the number is equal to 176. Find one number for which this could be true.

Nnesha (nnesha):

can you translate `The square of a number increased by 5 times the number is equal to 176` this into the equation ?

Nnesha (nnesha):

square means raising to the 2 power times = multiply try to write an equation

Nnesha (nnesha):

a number can be any variable let `a number` = x square of a number means x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The only thing that is confusing me is the part "5 times the number".

Nnesha (nnesha):

2 times the number(same number which is x ) so 2 times the number = 2x 5 times the number = ??? times = multiply

Okay Thank you :)

Nnesha (nnesha):

you got it? sure ??? :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My equation I used is n^2+5(n)=176 and I got the answers 11 and -16 in which both answers can be used to get 176. :)

Nnesha (nnesha):
