can someone help me define american romanticism? Our assignment tells us to define and explain it. My teacher is very strict on our own definition and I want to make sure I have it right in my own words (and of course back it up with my notes). So here is my point of view:

American Romanticism is defined as the literary period (after the Revolutionary War) in which America changed its views of society from the influences of Europeans to personal and individualistic ideal in which can define themselves uniquely.

That's a very good definition of it, but you might want to also add that it has emphasis on the individual's expression of emotion and imagination.
