you can't turn regular pennies (copper) to gold, that's called "transmutation" and what alchemy was all about, except it's not possible.

so you coated a penny with gold, not turned it into gold, right?

so yeah you can remove the coating with aqua regia but you will probably dissolve some of the copper coin in the process
