Help with iterates?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the question is find the first three iterates of f(x)=-3x-7 if x0=-8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay this is the first step I took. f(-8)=-3x-7 f(-8)=3x-8-7=30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is obviously wrong since it's not one of the iterates. xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Hero @hartnn

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol it would be -5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

. . .Why?

OpenStudy (welshfella):

-3(-8)- 7 = 24 - 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(-8)=-3x-7 -15=-3x -15/-3=5 x=5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

opps not -5 it postive 5

OpenStudy (welshfella):

No its x0 = -8 so you plug in -8 to -3x - 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol he right i jsut ask my math teacher

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good job

OpenStudy (welshfella):

so when x0 = -8 f(x) = 24-7 = 17 now for the next iterate you need to plug in x = 17 into -3x - 7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So how do I plug in the second iterate would it be, f(17)=-8(17)-7=58?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or this f(17)=-3x(17)-7=58 @ Welsh
