How does the past influence the present? Think in terms of global history and themes.

In the past, lots of traditions were made, and a lot of us still follow them today. So our culture is affected by the past. The Christmas tree was actually a German tradition, but when the queen married a German man, and cards were released of the royal family all by a Christmas tree, everyone wanted it, and eventually, the tradition spread like wildfire. The past also helps us learn our mistakes of future losses. For example, 9/11, now we're rebuilding the towers with better equipment and knowledge of how that building can withstand.
