OpenStudy (marcelie):

Please help me !!!! Describe all numbers x that are a distance of 6 from the number -3. Can you please find short cut of this problem is there is , Thanks.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

\(|x-(-3)|=6\)

OpenStudy (marcelie):

Are there two solutions to this problem ?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

yes \(|x+3|=6\) implies \(x+3=6\) and \(-(x+3)=6\)

OpenStudy (marcelie):

Where did the - ( x+3)= 6 came from? Where did the negative come from?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

\(|a|=b\) implies \(a=b\) and \(-a=b\). This is how you solve these. Think of this \(|x|=3\). The answers are \(x=3\) and \(x=-3\). Because \(|3|=|-3|=3\).

OpenStudy (marcelie):

is the answer x=3 and x=-9 ?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

correct

OpenStudy (marcelie):

Can you explain me the steps to this problem ? please.

OpenStudy (marcelie):

Is there a particular formula for this problem ?

OpenStudy (marcelie):

Can i think of the equation as 6-3 = 3 and 6+3 = -9 ?
