The Cold War (1948-1989) had Berlin surrounded by the by the Soviets, and they set up a blockade in 1948-49 to force England, France, and the USA out of west Berlin. Rail, road, and canal traffic was cut off in June of 1948. The airlift was set up to supply west Berlin with everything needed to live. The Soviets lifted blockade in May of 1949, and the airlift ended in September. This was the first major confrontation between the Soviets and the free world.
