5 times the difference of a number 8 means is 45, if your making it 5 times a number, we dont know the number so its automatically a variable, which in this case its 'm' so you're making it 5m because you want to multiply the number by 5, and difference means subtract, its telling you to subtract 8, so I guess you got it from here...
